Parents as Partners

"Parents are children's first and most enduring educators. When parents and practioners work together in early years settings, the results have a positive impact on the child's learning and development."
Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage.
Q.C.A./D.f.E.E. 2000

At Chelwood we strive to work closely with parents and carers to develop a partnership between home and school, in order to share together, the importance of these early years in each child's education. Parents and carers are welcome in the school at all times, and we greatly value any help parents and carers may have to give either in the classrooms or in the school generally.

Lending Library

All children can borrow books from the Lending Library. There are lots of things to borrow. Children can choose from story books, information books, songs, rhymes and poems. We also have story tapes and sets of story props including puppets, toys and picture cut-outs for retelling stories.

Sharing books and telling stories with your child are vital experiences in helping them become readers.

"There is no doubt whatever of the value of parents' involvement in the early stages of reading. The priority is to introduce children to books in their pre-school years and show them some of the pleasures and purposes of reading."
Dorothy Butler, Marie Clay
'Reading Begins at Home'

Information sheets giving ideas on how to use the books, tapes and props are shared with parents and carers.

The 'Activity Packs for Home' lending library offers children and their families resources and activities to take home to play and learn together.

All the packs have helpful information for parents on how to use the resources and the purpose of these play activites.
