Chelwood Nursery School

Chelwood Nursery School is a Maintained Nursery School, funded by the Government, through Lewisham Council. Our mission is to provide:

‘Excellent personalized early childhood education for every child’

We have specialist expertise for working with children and families of very young children from 0-5 years old, particularly those in the Ear;y Years Foundation Stage 0-5 years.

Chelwood provides children aged 2, 3 and 4 year with a play based Early Childhood Education.  Most children can start Chelwood the term after their 3rd birthday, and will enter one of our three classes. This class will be their ‘home’ class for the whole time the child attends Chelwood, giving them a secure sense of belonging, a stable friendship group and familiar adults, including their named ‘key person’.

Free Early Education Entitlement

Chelwood offers the Government’s 15 hours  Free Early Education Entitlement for 3 & 4 year olds, over five days, in blocks of three hour sessions; either five mornings or five afternoons each week for 38 weeks of the year.

The school follows Lewisham’s school term dates, with summer, Christmas and Easter holidays and half term breaks.

We are also able to offer Free Early Education Entitlement for 2 year olds and the 30 Funded hours for Working Parents.

Qualified Workforce

Each class is staffed by a class team of four qualified Early Years educators, led by Qualified Teacher with an Early Years specialism trained to teach throughout the Primary age phase.  The children’s learning environment is carefully planned by the class team to provide a wide range of learning experiences for the children both inside the classroom and outside.

Outdoor play

Out door play is an essential part of the learning experience children have here at Chelwood and we are committed to providing high quality outdoor learning all year round. Children have direct access to the outdoor area from their classes and are encouraged to use the whole school as their learning environment, visiting the other classes and making their own decisions about where they play.
The activities and learning experiences are carefully planned by the class teams who through their knowledge of the children and families personalise activities to follow and support the children’s individual interests and learning styles.

Chelwood has adopted the Swedish saying; “there is no such thing as bad weather…. Just bad clothing”
